"Ben? Ben Kenobi? Boy am I glad to see you!".
A SDCC exclusive. Star Wars: The Black Series 6" Obi-wan Kenobi based on his appearance in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. He was one of my most wanted characters from Episode IV. And with Leia going to be released later this year, the circle (main cast) will be complete. Whoops. I almost forgot about Tarkin. I'll like a figure of him as well.
Obi-wan comes packaged in a neat black box. On the front is a great portrait of Obi-wan and on the back is an image of his humble abode on Tatooine.
The front cover is secured with velcro and it opens to reveal the figure and accessories. There is no window which I feel there should be. Even if the contents are secured there's still a chance something might drop out. Or even taken. Like the lightsabers for instance.
The portrait is printed on a card and it may be taken out. This is nice as some of us might not want to keep the box but still want the portrait. We can also get creative and make our own portraits and use the box for other figures.
On the back the portrait is the message that Princess Leia delivers. Click images to enlarge.
On the side of the box you can find a description of Obi-wan.
Here's Obi-wan out of the package. He's dressed in his brown cloak and robes. They did a pretty good job with the soft goods cloak. I think it's just the right size. The hood portion is a little big but I was able to get it into a decent shape for the pics. The figure looks great. The head sculpt is decent. It has a pretty good likeness. The head looks kinda longish though and I also feel his beard is too thick. He's crossing into Santa Claus territory. The eyes were painted looking up on my figure which is annoying. There's good detail in the hair. I like that there was some light black shading done on it and also on the beard.
The cloak is removable. It takes some fiddling as the robes sleeves are quite large. Here you can better see his robes. They look thick and heavy. There's great detail on it. There are many folds and wrinkles. It is also textured. Great stuff! The lower half of the robes are quite stiff and will restrict leg articulation. The belt and pouch were sculpted on the robes. I like that they painted the buckle and studs. It even has a black wash on it.
Just to show you the detail on his pants underneath. It's textured. The knee joints are also textured. And the leather like boots have wrinkles on them.
Accessories. He come with his lightsaber, Anakin's lightsaber, a table and a hologram figure of Princess Leia.
The table is textured and has electronic lights and sound. It plays the full message from Princess Leia and allows us to recreate that scene from the movie. Here's a video of it. Please excuse the poor audio.
Pretty cool isn't it. It's advisable to remove the batteries if you don't intend to use it. To do that we unpeg the hologram figure and remove the top part of the table. We'll then be able to access the batteries after unscrewing the cover. It runs on three triple A batteries.
Here's a close-up of the hologram Princess Leia. There's some nice detail on it. The peg is under the figure and it is unable to stand on its own.
I compared his lightsaber with the one that came with the Episode III version. The lightsabers are similar as you expect. This new one though is larger in size, has a darker blue blade and has a sculpted ring instead of a peg to attach it to his belt.
Articulation. He's got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ball joint waist, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. He can look up and down well. The elbows can almost bend 90 degrees. The waist joint allows rotation and allows him to bend forwards and backwards just a bit. Leg articulation is restricted by his robes. He can hardly raise his legs up. He can spread his legs out as there are slits at the sides of the robe.
Comparison shots.
This is a great figure. I'm quite pleased with the cloak. The electronic table is fun too. I'm not too happy about the leg articulation but I think plastic for the lower portion of his robes look better than if it were soft goods. If you have trouble getting this I think Obi-wan will be released in the regular line, minus some accessories though. Thanks for viewing!
